Chapter Five

The envelope was a distracting beacon on the edge of Graham’s desk. The academics records for Spencer Neil, including reference letters for the scholarship, letters of acceptance, transcripts—hell, Iowa’s immunization records were probably in there. Graham drummed his fingers on the desk, glaring at the treasure trove of information. Obtaining the documents had involved a huge measure of secrecy and some bribery, primarily to keep his name out of the transaction. The administration didn’t exactly pass around student files, even to professors.

All the conflicting ideas about who Iowa was had driven him to the act of insanity. He drew the line at physical stalking to obtain information. The only time he allowed himself to see Iowa now was in class, and that was difficult enough. Graham had developed a very close relationship with the podium in the lecture hall.

There was no way he could pace the room the way he was accustomed to, not with Iowa’s eyes following him. Two weeks. He’d made it two weeks, six classes, and multiple e-mails. His hand was getting tired, his lube supply low, and Luca was really bored of his complaining.

The memories of his time with Iowa in bed were killing him. God, he was pathetic.

With a sigh of defeat, he snagged the envelope, used a letter opener to rip into it, and exposed a pile of papers clipped together. A Post-it note was stuck to the front. S.N. Smarty Pants has his shit together. Good luck, Prof. His teaching assistant, Wes Conners, one of the few individuals he could trust to be discreet, had been his go-to guy. When he’d asked, all Wes had done was shrug and say, “Eh, I was bored anyway.”

Graham flipped through the pages and found Iowa was indeed intelligent. The few places his grades dropped below the A range were in arts-and-letters courses, yet even then the grades weren’t lower than Bs. Undergraduate in economics, minoring in accounting. He’d attended Iowa State University on academic scholarship. Then received another scholarship along with financial aid to attend the graduate economics program he’d been accepted to here. Although all his credits hadn’t carried over, not uncommon when transferring from out-of-state universities, which explained why Iowa was in his class.

Graham shifted through glowing reference letters from high school teachers, college professors, and work-study advisors. All expounded on Iowa as being honest and hardworking. One went so far as to describe him as selflessly dedicated, while another pointed out his kindness. They all asserted he would be an asset to any program because he was a team player, energetic, willing to give one hundred and ten percent.

Graham set the papers down and reclined in his chair, rubbing his nape. From what he could tell, Iowa’s confession of terror at being trapped in farm life was genuine. This guy wasn’t a blackmailer. It would be quite a stretch to think he’d accomplished all these achievements through deceit. No, Graham had pinned Iowa to the wall, and Iowa and fought him in the only way he could think to.
